Day 18, Our Last Night

After breakfast we drove down the west side of the Coromandel Peninsula and stopped in Miranda for some lounge time in the mineral baths. It was nice because there was hardly anybody there. It was overcast but the water was warm.

We went to the Auckland airport to drop off our camper van and determined that it'd be cheaper to rent a car for our last night in Auckland than it would be to taxi around the city. So we rented our third and final vehicle--another Ford Mondeo--and headed into the city.

We had selected our final night's lodging solely for the fact that it was a "spa room" and it was in Auckland. Unfortunately, we didn't realize that technically it was in Takapuna, a district of Auckland that is across the harbor from city center. The lodge was pleasant, the room was beautiful, and we loved the hot tub...but it wasn't the "city" hotel we were thinking we were getting for our final night. Takapuna is like any small rich town in Southern California--nauseatingly trendy, totally white, and completely devoid of any culture. I nicknamed it Tacky Puna. We did, however, luck into a fabulous little Italian restaurant that happened to have our favorite hard to find New Zealand wine.
