We had breakfast at a cute little cafe in Ponsonby with Anakke. Since it was day one in our camper van she offered to take us to the grocery store so we could get everything we needed. After settling into our new home for the week we said our goodbyes and headed north to the Bay of Islands.
We were suddenly feeling lazy about doing too much driving and overwhelmed by our options that seemed to be in opposite directions. We settled on a short 3 hour destination. The drive was nice with rolling green hills and a little bit of rain. The Bay of Islands was somewhat disappointing. It was pretty...but not shockingly beautiful like the geography we'd experienced on the South Island. It was also touristy in that tacky gift shop and cotton candy sort of way. We avoided town and drove to the outskirts hoping to find a nice place to camp. Unfortunately, our only options were Holiday Parks. We settled on Hawaru Falls Resort. Luckily we managed to score a great spot right on the water with a view of the falls. It was nestled in between two squatty palm trees so we just closed the side curtains, opened the back door and pretended nobody else was there. The weather got stormy and windy so we cooked dinner, drank some wine, played some Scrabble and enjoyed our private view.
