Prenatal Visit

All in all a really good doctors visit. The only bad part was that Jeremy had a last minute meeting he couldn't get out of so he couldn't come.

Today was day one of having to pee in the cup each visit. It was also the first time Dr. Hank measured my fundal measurement. I was too out of it to remember my number, but all is well--measuring right on target at 13 weeks. No sonogram today, just listened to the baby's heartbeat.

We spent almost an hour in Dr. Hank's office going over paperwork and reviewing my blood work and urinalysis results. Everything looks great; nothing icky except my bladder infection. Doctor says that my make up is such that I'm prone to them and he predicted that this wasn't going to be the last in my pregnancy.

Finally, we went through my labor and delivery records and reviewed the reasons why I had a c-section and why I had hemorrhaged. My concern was that I will hemorrhage in another c-section. For the first time ever I got a very thorough, and understandable explanation. Essentially my poor uterus had become "atonic" meaning that after having spent 20+ hours trying to push out a 9 pound baby that didn't want to come out it was fatigued and could no longer continue to finish the job (especially on top of the laundry list of other traumatic events that had happened). He compared it to opening and closing my hand in a pumping action. He said, "open and close your fist 10 times, now 10 times more, and again. 10 more times." This conversation led to a lengthy discussion about VBAC versus a planned c-section. He was agreeable to do whatever I wanted to do. Ultimately, even though a c-section has risks of its own  I am more comfortable with those risks than the unknown of a VBAC. I have Noah to get home to--I cannot take a risk that could leave me out of commission longer than necessary or God forbid cause loss of life (for me or the baby).  Dr. Hank is confident that I will find the planned c-section experience to be 100% different than the trauma I experienced before. I believe this is true.

We scheduled the delivery date for Monday, October 25th. This is 5 days before my due date. Since Noah came ON his due date there is a possibility that I will go into labor before the 25th. I guess we'll deal with that when we get there. :)
