Making it Official

When it came to finding someone to officiate our ceremony we knew it had to be someone who knew both of us--preferably a long time family friend. The first time we talked about it Jeremy suggested Tom ("GD") Burton. As soon as he said the name I knew Tom was perfect. Tom has been a friend of the Yoches family since before Tobey and Gary got married. I had known Tom from family dinners for the past almost seven years. We had even traveled with him and the Yoches family to Mexico for 2 weeks.

While we were visiting Jeremy's parents we invited Tom over for dinner so we could ask him if he would get ordained for one day and perform our ceremony. As a gift we got him a beautiful Hawaiian shirt to add to his collection--he only wears Hawaiian shirts. They seem to match his sunny disposition. Tom is one of those guys that always seems to be smiling. When he arrived he began to tell us about a wedding that he went to that weekend where the couple had a friend perform the ceremony. He had never heard of people getting ordained for one day and was questioning the legality of it. This was the perfect segue way for Jeremy to say..."Actually, it is legal. In fact, we'd like to ask you if you would perform our marriage ceremony..."

Tom seemed genuinely shocked. He was very quiet, expressed great thanks for thinking of him and told us that he needed to meditate on our request and get back to us.  While it wasn't the straight answer I was looking for I was comfortable with the fact that he was approaching our marriage with such seriousness. The very next afternoon he came over and said he would love to do it. :)
